Rear differential/ Transfer case fluid change on Honda/Acura
Rear differential;
How to change AWD rear differential fluid for a Honda/Acura. This change was completed on an 2013 Acura RDX … After jacking up the rear of the car and putting it on jack stands. (check the car is safely on the jack stands)You will need to use a 3⁄8 drive breaker bar to loosen the fill and drain plugs. You always want to start with the fill plug. (The reason being if you start with the drain plug and for some reason you can't get the fill plug LOOSE you have a problem). After both are loose, drain the fluid.
Now that it is drained, remove the OLD washers, add a NEW washer to the fill and drain plug and insert the drain plug. Torque the plug to 35 ft lbs. Take the fluid pump, attach it to the quart container and pump until the fluid starts to run out the side of the differential. (should be 1 ½ quarts, check owners manual) I recommend always using Honda fluid. Replace the fill plug and make it hand tight. Start the car for about a minute so the pump can run some fluid through it. After the car is off remove the fill plug and add the fluid until it comes out again. Now tighten the fill plug to 35 ft lbs, that is it.
Transfer case change;
This change was completed on a 2013 Acura RDX … After jacking up the front of the car and putting it on jack stands. Be sure to keep the car level. You will need to use a 3⁄8 drive breaker bar to loosen the fill and drain plugs. You always want to start with the fill plug. (The reason being if you start with the drain plug and for some reason you can't get the fill plug off you can't refill the transfer case). After both are loose, drain the fluid.
Now that it is drained remove the old washer and add a new washer to the fill and drain plug. Now insert the drain plug, torque to 35 ft lbs. Take the fluid pump, attach it to the quart container and pump until the fluid starts to run out the side of the differential. (check owners manual for specific amount ) I always use Honda gear fluid. Replace the fill plug and tighten to 35 ft lbs, that is it.
